Bolthouse Farms Closes Buttonwillow Facility

Local Businesses Feel Effects

Last Friday, Bolthouse Farms announced that it will close its Buttonwillow plant. The ripple effects of the Bolthouse farms closure may impact surrounding business.

The company has recently announced plans to consolidate its California processing operations by closing its secondary carrot processing facility in Buttonwillow.

The recent organic certification of the primary East Brundage Bolthouse Farms facility in Bakersfield, Calif., allows Bolthouse Farms to streamline the majority of its organic carrot processing and production at its Bakersfield facility.

"By consolidating our California manufacturing operations, we are able to improve companywide efficiency and productivity, thus enabling us to continue providing consumers the freshest, regionally produced products," said Jeff Dunn, president and chief executive officer of Wm. Bolthouse Farms Inc.

Bolthouse Farms operations currently cover most of North America, with processing and distribution facilities in California, Washington, Georgia and soon eastern Canada.

It is unclear at this point about how many of the 214 employees laid off lived in Buttonwillow and or how many of those will be transferred to the Bakersfield plant. On Monday mini marts and restaurants in Buttonwillow said they were already starting to see fewer customers.

Clarks Derrick Cafe had plans to operate a catering truck to exclusively serve Bolthouse employees, but now had to change those plans.

"It's definitely going to delayed business for us. We are a little cafe with a big heart. This will effect future plans, but we are still planning growth. We are still expanding and are adding a bar area. We want to make this a better place for everybody," said Patricia Posey of Clarks Derrick Cafe.

The cafe just opened six months ago. They said, with community support and the Frito-Lay plant employees across the street, their restaurant should do just fine.

At this time Bolthouse Farms does not have any plans to sell the Buttonwillow facility building. According to Dunn, there is tremendous potential to re-engineer the facility into a state-of-the-art operation capable of producing food and beverage products designed.

Business leaders in the area said they are just waiting to see what happens when the dust settles.
