4 Accused Of Stealing Over $3K In Grapes

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The Kern County Sheriff's Department said that four people have been arrested after 62 boxes of grapes were never loaded onto a truck.Around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, the KCSD Air Support Unit located a large reefer box truck inside a grape vineyard near Neumarkel and Panama roads.Air Support called for ground units due to the large number of table grape thefts this year.
Deputies from the Lamont Substation contacted four people in the field loading full boxes of Red Flame grapes into the reefer truck.The workers said they knew the owner of the grapes and had permission to take the grapes.Detectives from the Rural Crime Task force responded to the scene and determined that the four workers did not have permission to be on the property or to be taking and packaging grapes. Detectives removed 280 boxes of grapes and found an additional 62 boxes that had not been loaded onto the truck.The grapes were valued at $3,420.The owner of the grapes was contacted and responded to the scene where the grapes were returned to him.Hmayak Yeghiazaryan, 44, of North Hollywood, Altunyan Oganes, 43, of Lancaster, Angel Gonzalez Garcia, 46, of Lamont, and Agustin Gonzalez Garcia, 51, of Lamont, were all arrested on charges of grand theft, conspiracy and possession of stolen property.
