Second Teen Found Guilty In Death Of Joe, Dorothy Parrott

Teens To Be Sentenced In September

UPDATED: 12:51 pm PDT August 25, 2010

The second teen accused of beating a southwest elderly couple to death has been found guilty on two charges of first-degree murder.

Eighteen-year-old Kyle Hoffman and his nephew 18-year-old Luis Palafox were accused of breaking into the home of Joe and Dorothy Parrott and stabbing and beating them to death two years ago.

Hoffman told detectives it was Palafox who killed the couple while he stayed behind.

In October, Hoffman pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder in the stabbing and beating deaths of the Parrotts.

Part of Hoffman’s plea deal was an agreement that he would testify against his nephew, Palafox. Hoffman admitted to burglarizing the home, but said it was Palafox who murdered the elderly couple.

During the court proceedings in March, Hoffman refused to testify against his nephew about his involvement in the stabbing and beating deaths of the Parrotts.

Hoffman's case was brought back to trial and on Wednesday, the jury came back with a guilty verdict on two charges of first-degree murder.

During the trial, for Palafox on Tuesday, the defense argued there was no proof that placed Palafox at the scene.

The jury did not agree and found Palafox guilty on two charges of first-degree murder.

Palafox now faces 25 years to life in prison, which is a sentence his attorney, Michael Lukehart, said could pose some issues.

"There will be some interesting constitutional issues in adjudicating the sentencing because it is still a little bit of an open question as to whether you can sentence a juvenile to life without parole," Lukehart said.

Palafox and Hoffman were only 16 at the time of the killing, but were both tried as adults.

Both are due back in court for sentencing next month.
