Tax Preparer Pleads Guilty To 4 Counts Of Tax Evasion

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced Tuesday that Arthur Burnett Lawson, 66, of Bakersfield, pleaded guilty on Monday before United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii to four counts of tax evasion.This case is the product of an extensive investigation by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations.Lawson admitted that he prepared and signed false and fraudulent U.S. income tax returns for himself and his wife for the 2002 and 2003 tax years.

Lawson Change Of Plea Lawson is a registered tax preparer with the State of California, owning his own tax preparation business in Bakersfield known as “Income Tax Inc.” Lawson admitted that the total combined tax loss was $60,287.Lawson is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Ishii on Nov. 8, 2010. The maximum statutory penalty for each violation of tax evasion is five years in prison and a $100,000 fine.The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
