OILDALE, Calif. -- Most of Barbara Ray's home was damaged in a fire and Ray claimed PG&E was at fault.Monday, the utility has settled her claim. It has been a waiting game for Ray to see if she would be able to rebuild the home that she and her husband built just about 60 years ago.
That home was severely damaged last April in a fire, and Ray claimed that PG&E was at fault. What made matters worse for Ray, the home was not insured. Ray lives on Social Security and let the insurance lapse so she could pay for some minor home repairs.Sitting in the middle of ashes for several months, all she had to hold on to was her faith. "Now that I don't have a home. I don't have much of anything left, all I have is God," she said.Monday, a representative from PG&E personally hand delivered the settlement check to Ray.Ray asked all media not to disclose the amount of the settlement, which ABC 23 has honored."I thank Jesus. Words cannot express the thankfulness, the joy and in a way relief," said Ray.The utility is not claiming responsibility for causing the fire, but they honored Ray's claim because there was a dispute."We hired an investigator to do a report at to what cause the fire. Barbara Ray also hired an investigator. There was a disagreement between the two reports as to what caused the fire. Because of that disagreement we made the decision to honor the claim," said Denny Boyles, of PG&E.Ray also said that it took too long for PG&E to get her a claim form after the fire, which is something PG&E officials now say they will make changes to make it easier for customers to get claim forms.
