25 Vehicles Impounded During DUI Checkpoint

POSTED: 8:55 am PDT September 3, 2010

On Thursday, the Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Enforcement Detail conducted a DUI / Drivers License Checkpoint in the 8600 blk of Ming Ave. between the hours of 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.

As a result of this enforcement event, police said a total of 1,885 vehicles passed through the checkpoint: 1,343 of those vehicles were screened by officers, 25 vehicles were impounded, 16 motorists were issued citations for unlicensed driver, 9 motorists were issued citations for driving on a suspended/revoked drivers license, 3 motorists were issued citations for miscellaneous vehicle code violations, 3 motorists were asked to perform field sobriety tests to determine their level of intoxication, 1 of the motorists asked to perform these tests was subsequently arrested and charged with DUI, 1 driver was evaluated for marijuana impairment; however, officers determined he was not in violation of DUI.

This DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint was in an effort to reduce the number of persons injured or killed each year in DUI related collisions.

Bakersfield Police will continue to deploy additional officers throughout this Labor Day weekend to deter drunken driving on local roadways.

A major component of this enforcement event is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
