Woman Accused Of Stealing Van Gets Shot, Drives To Hospital

Deputies: Woman Drove Over Deputy's Car

UPDATED: 3:17 pm PDT September 3, 2010

The Kern County Sheriff's Department said a woman was shot and taken to jail after she drove over a deputy's car.

Deputies were dispatched to the California Inn at 1030 Wible Road around 12:25 a.m. Friday for a stolen vehicle investigation.

Deputies said 30-year-old Xavier Reyes told them that he had his 1990 Mazda minivan stolen. Reyes told deputies that there was a shotgun and ammunition inside the vehicle.

Reyes described the person who stole his van as a 27-year-old white woman with blond hair who was wearing a black shirt and jeans.

Around 2:20 a.m., deputies said they found the vehicle parked in the area of Weedpatch Highway and Brundage Lane. The vehicle was occupied by a woman who matched the description given by Reyes.

Deputies said that they approached the vehicle on foot and made contact with 27-year-old Jessica Lesly, who was in the van.

Lesly started the vehicle and fled the scene, almost striking the deputy, according to the KCSD.

Deputies said that Lesly was driving the van with its lights off and a pursuit ensued.

Lesly led deputies on a 20-minute pursuit through East Bakersfield reaching speeds up to 80 mph, according to the KCSD.

Deputies said that during the pursuit, Lesly made several attempts to force deputies off the road.

Lesly rammed and disabled a patrol car driven by Deputy Brandon Rutledge in the area of Viginia Avenue and Layne Street, the KCSD reported.

Deputies said Rutledge fired two shots at Lesly, striking her once in the upper body. Lesly continued to flee, backing into a second patrol car.

As the pursuit continued, Lesly attempted to force patrol vehicles off the road, deputies said.

The pursuit concluded at Kern Medical Center. Lesly continued to be combative with deputies and a sheriff’s office K-9 assisted in taking her into custody, according to the KCSD.

Lesly is currently being treated for her injuries, which are considered to be non-life threatening.

Rutledge is a four-year veteran with the sheriff’s office currently assigned to the Metropolitan Patrol Division. Rutledge suffered minor injuries and has been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

Deputies said they located and recovered a shotgun and ammunition in the Mazda. Lesly was the sole occupant of the vehicle during the pursuit.

Lesly will be booked into the Kern County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, grand theft auto, possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and recklessly evading an officer.
