BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The Labor Day Holiday is a busy one along the Kern River every year and rescue crews were busy there on Sunday afternoon.A teenager from San Jose was swept away by the current while playing in the water with friends. The 19-year-old ended up stuck along a rock and a water fall just east of Powerhouse Number One in the canyon.
Rescuers tried to reach the teen by boat and by climbing out onto the rocks, but in the end they decided it was best to hoist the victim to safety by using the Sheriff's Helicopter Air Five. Part of the reason why, said Sgt. Mark Baldwin of the Sheriff's Department, is that the victim was too weak to assist in his own rescue. The teen was hoisted safely and taken to an awaiting ambulance but refused medical aid.He was not wearing safety equipment while in the river, something officials recommend.
