Police: Teen Jumps Into City Truck To Avoid Shooting

POSTED: 4:32 pm PDT September 7, 2010
UPDATED: 5:15 pm PDT September 7, 2010

The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating a shooting between a group of teens, city workers and a another teen.

Police said that two Bakersfield City Park employees, occupying a City Parks truck, were exiting the Planz Park parking lot onto Planz Road around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday when they said they saw a lone Hispanic teen being chased by a group of other Hispanic and black male teens.

According to Sgt. Mary DeGeare, the teen being chased jumped into the back of the city truck and picked up a shovel to defend himself.

One of the Hispanic teens boys in the group pulled out a handgun and fired multiple times toward the teen, striking the truck, DeGeare said.

Police said the City Parks employees ducked down in the cab and avoided injury.

The teen who was hiding in the truck appeared uninjured and jumped out of the truck and ran along nearby railroad tracks, city workers told police.

The larger group ran south along the railroad tracks.

The group of teens was described as four to five Hispanic boys and one black boy, all in their mid-to late teens.

The BPD is working in conjunction with South High School and the Kern High School District Police Department because of the time of day the incident occurred, age of those involved and the proximity to the school.

Anyone with information regarding this offense is urged to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111.
