Police: Car Drifted Into Opposite Lane

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Two people are dead after the car they were in collided with a Kern County fire truck that was coming from an accident.The crash happened just after 8 p.m. on Thursday on Highway 178 just east of Rancheria Road.Fire officials said ladder truck 41, which is stationed on Mount Vernon and Virginia avenues in east Bakersfield, was heading back from an accident in the canyon.
Officials said the truck was driving west on Highway 178 when the Honda Civic merged into the westbound lane heading east and collided head-on with the fire truck.Officials said 36-year-old Melissa Hope (Romero) Aguinaga and 35-year-old Arthur Alvarez Aguinaga were in the Honda and died at the scene.Highway 178 east and west were closed for a couple hours during the night as crews worked to clean up the debris.
