BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- International Square, located on Baker and Sumner streets, is usually packed from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. However, it may be closing for good, KERO reported.
City said illegal activity is getting out of control but the homeless worry they will have no where else to go.
On most days, you can find up to 150 homeless people gathering and sleeping. According to the city, it is a place where people sell drugs, drink alcohol and commit acts of prostitution.Frank Isaacs is homeless. He said the park is the only place where scores of homeless people have to go during the day. Other homeless people told KERO that the park is a good thing, because it keeps them all in a small area."I think it's stupid to shut down the park. It keeps us all in one place," said one homeless man.But City Councilwoman Sue Benham said the illegal activity has gotten out of control and there are not enough police officers to patrol the park all of the time. It costs the city $12,000 to keep the tiny half-acre park clean."It's not pretty. There are syringes, condoms -- people defecate in park. Not only is this an issue of public safety but public health," Benham said.Benham pointed out that if homeless people want to hang out in an open space, they can move to Pavilion Park which is just a few blocks from International Square.
