BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A caretaker who was under surveillance for almost a year, was arrested Monday and accused of stealing drugs from inmates and swapping the drugs with another woman's medicine.Deputies from the Taft Substation of the Kern County Sheriff's Department said they began an elder abuse investigation at a home in the 100 block of Van Buren Street, Ford City.Deputies said the case involved a 76-year-old woman whose caretaker was Carol Louise Juette, 61. Deputies said Juette was employed as a nurse with the California Department of Corrections and worked at Wasco State Prison.
Deputies said Juette lived with the 76-year-old woman and was bringing medication home from the prison and switching these medications with ones normally prescribed to the woman.Deputies searched the home and said they found a large amount of various prescription medications. Some of the medications were contained inside plastic containers marked with the names of inmate's names from Wasco State Prison along with their CDC numbers, deputies said.None of the medications from the prison were narcotics; however, several fell under the scheduling listed in California Health & Safety Code section 11377 (a), which is possession of a controlled substance.Over the course of several months, deputies continued to investigate any role Juette may have had in abusing the woman. The investigation did not show that Juette had unlawfully medicated, physically abused or embezzled from the woman. The case was submitted to the Kern County district attorney.A warrant was later issued for Juette charging her possession of a controlled substance.Deputies arrested Juette in Oildale on Monday. She was booked at the Central Receiving Facility and her bail was set at $10,000.
