Wildfire Destroys Tehachapi Home, Threatens 30 Others

Mandatory Evacuations Underway For Blackburn Canyon Community

A deadly plane crash in Tehachapi Sunday morning sparked a grassfire that quickly grew into a wildfire. It has scorched at least 3,500 acres and destroyed one home while threatening 30 others, fire officials say.

One person was killed on the Cessna, and late Sunday Kern County Deputies said they believe a second person may have been on board the plane. The crash about 11:30 Sunday morning sparked a small grass fire that was fueled by 10 mph winds, and as of 9:45 p.m. the wildfire had grown to 3,500 acres with 0% containment.

Crews say one home has been destroyed and 30 others are threatened. There are mandatory evacuations underway for the Blackburn Canyon area and Mountain Meadows. Evacuation orders are in place for residences in areas that are south of Highline Road, north of Oak Creek, west of White Oak, and east Water Canyon.

Firefighters are calling it the "Canyon Incident," and it's burning in the vicinity of last year's West Fire that destroyed 23 homes, damaged eight others and scorched 1,658 acres.

There are currently 600 firefighters on the scene, assisted by seven air tankers and four helicopters. But crews say the terrain is steep and rugged and they are having a hard time battling the blaze.

The Kern Chapter of the American Red Cross has opened a few shelters for the evacuees, including one at 126 S. Snyder Ave. and the gym at Jacobsen Middle School at 711 Anita St.

While people are being evacuated, there isn't room for animals at the shelters. Chelie Burgeson says her ranch is available for evacuated livestock. She's located in Sand Canyon, at 10929 Tanganda Road. She can be reached at 661-231-5746. Also, Mesonika's Ranch on Country Canyon Road is available to take horses and livestock. They can be reached at 661-771-6321.

The general public is advised to dial 211 for information about the fire.
