Azita Nikooei's Cold Case May Come To An End

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Nathan Mowers, the man who pleaded with detectives to find his fiancée, has now confessed to killing her almost eight years ago, District Attorney Lisa Green said.Deputy District Attorney Melissa Allen said that Mowers told them that he strangled Azita Nikooei to death during an argument and then drove to the San Bernardino County line and dumped her body.

Allen said Mowers never buried the body.About two weeks ago, Mowers took officials to where he said he dumped the body and an acrylic fingernail was found, but the district attorney's office said it is still waiting on its DNA testing.As part of the plea agreement, Mowers agreed to 11 years in prison and prosecutors said they would drop the first-degree murder charges.On Sept. 6, 2004, Mowers pleaded with Kern County to find his fiancée, who he said was missing.After Mowers pleaded with the community in 2004 to find Nikooei, Bakersfield Police Department officers said Mowers vanished from Kern County.

Nikooei was a dancer at Deja Vu at the time of her disappearance.On Sept. 30, 2004, Mowers was pulled over by Wisconsin state troopers for a traffic violation in Monroe County, near the town of Sparta.Officers said a search of his vehicle turned up a handgun.Mowers was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon.Mowers was only considered a person of interest in the death of Nikooei.Nikooei's car was found abandoned in the parking lot of the Marketplace on Ming Avenue in Bakersfield, five days after she vanished.Bakersfield police issued an arrest warrant for Mowers, accusing him of killing Nikooei.Mowers was arrested by Indio police May 1, 2011.On Monday, Green said Mowers entered a guilty plea to the charge of voluntary manslaughter.Nikooei's body has never been found.
