Over $14k Vet Bill For Chemically Burned Dog

Family Hosting Fundraiser To Gather Money For Vet Bills

A family has spent nearly $15,000 saving the life of their beloved dog after it was badly injured while they were on vacation.

Cindy Holloway contacted 23ABC and said that the family's 5-year-old black Labrador retriever, Hope, was burned by chemicals in the beginning of January 2012.

"Our veterinarian suspects that some type of caustic chemical was either poured or sprayed on her," Jessica Evans said. "She has extensive burns on her back and legs. We have good reason to believe this was an intentional and cruel act, but we do not have video evidence, so we are unable to proceed with any type of criminal charges."

Evans says she suspects a disgruntled neighbor might have poured some type of caustic chemical on Hope, causing severe damages that required skin grafts, stitches and medication that racked up a medical bill of $14,800.

  • "We are focusing all our energy on helping her to recover from this horrific ordeal she has had to go through," Evans said. "Hope was gravely ill when we first brought her to the vet., and there wasn’t much hope that she would survive this, but our sweet girl is such a fighter, and has truly beaten the odds."

Evans said that their family was told that they should euthanize Hope because of the extensive damages to its body. Though the Evans family said the Coffee Road Animal Hospital never mentioned the dog should be euthanized.

But Evans said that Hope was adopted in 2006 after her grandfather died and they named their dog Hope, because of the hope that it gave their family.

The Evans family is hosting a fundraiser Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the Self Serve Pet Spa at 7401 White Lane to help pay for their medical bills.

Shari Evans said, "David and Amy, the owners of Self Serve Pet Spa on White Lane, have been so kind and generous, and they organized everything regarding the fundraiser."

There is also an online fundraiser where you can donate money to their cause.
