BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A 911 tape shed new light Tuesday on the moments after a farm worker collapsed last week south of Arvin, KERO reported.Asuncion Valdivia was pronounced dead at Kern Medical Center less than one hour after he began feeling dizzy and fainted in a vineyard. He had only been employed at Giumarra Vineyard for five days when he collapsed.Within seconds of his collapse, a cell phone call was placed to 911 and an ambulance was requested. But, dispatchers were unable to get a location of the vineyard and an ambulance was never sent.
Dispatchers spent the next 30 to 45 seconds trying to pinpoint the location but the call was eventually disconnected. On the second call-back attempt, the foreman, Ramon Mena, answered the phone and gave it back to the original caller. The dispatcher tried once more to find the group but Olga said that Valdivia was already en route to the hospital. The United Farm Workers Union claimed that Valdivia's son, Luis, was told to drive his father home, despite claims on the 911 call that he was being taken to the hospital.John Giumarra said the foreman acted quickly and properly within seconds of the fainting. The coroner's office has not released exact cause of death.Officials at Kern Medical Center said Valdivia probably died from heat stroke. His body temperature was 108 degrees.
