Native American Festival Celebrates Culture
BAKERSFIELD -- Native American culture was on display at Bakersfield College, where more than 100 people came out to experience what they say is a dying culture.
The 9th Annual Standing Bear Pow-Wow kicked off on the night of June 3.
Organizers say the aim of the event is to educate the community on the Native American culture, which they say is slowly disappearing.
"The sad part is a part of the culture is dying and if we don't take the time to spend the energy to teach our children and get active, then we lose it and it's not good for anybody," said Gene Albitre, president of the Native American Preservation Council.
Organizers also say that not only is the Pow-Wow educational; it's also fun.
The celebration continues on June 4, where arts and crafts will be on display, and Native American singers and dancers adorned in authentic regalia, will entertain crowds.
