Buck Owens' Anthem Celebrated On "Streets Of Bakersfield"
BAKERSFIELD-- -- If you've ever sang or hummed along to the Buck Owens' hit "Streets of Bakersfield" and dreamed of joining him for a duet, then Wednesday night was your chance.
More than 100 people took part in the outdoor sing-a-long as part of Country Music Television's upcoming program on the 20 greatest songs about cities.
As it turns out, Bakersfield ranks near the top.
"There were some real good singers around me," said Buck Owens, "I lost my place several times but the lady next to me kept nudging me."
Bakersfield is one of 5 cities that CMT is visiting to shoot the videos for the special that will air in August.
"This is the biggest crowd so far," said Ritch Sublett, a CMT producer.
Many participants said it was an experience they'll never forget.
"It's the city I was born in and yes I knew all the words," said Patrick Michael, "It's like knowing all the words to the national anthem."
Merle Haggard's hit "Okie from Muskogee" was also chosen as one of the top 20 songs.
