Farmworker Dies From Heat Stroke

POSTED: 11:20 p.m. PDT July 15, 2005

A Bakersfield farm labor contractor is under investigation following the death of a Lamont field worker.

Salud Rodriguez collapsed in a tomato field off Wheeler Ridge Rd. near Mettler on July 13.

He suffered from heat stroke and was taken to Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield, where he was pronounced dead.

Rodriguez was employed by farm labor contractor David Castillo.

Castillo is responsible for providing his employees with water breaks and shade.

Cal-OSHA is currently investigating.

Rodriguez is the second worker to die in nearly a year.

The United Farm Workers say work breaks are critical to safety.
