Groups Reach Compromise Over Sharing Street Name
BAKERSFIELD -- Two groups haggling over the use of Merle Haggard's name have reached a compromise that will honor the country music legend on two sides of town.
A Bakersfield committee wanted to re-name a short section of "S" Street as "Merle Haggard Way". The proposal already cleared the Planning Commission and was on its way to the City Council, but an appeal was filed by an Oildale group.
They had their sights set on a section of 7th Standard Road by the new Bill Thomas Terminal at Meadows Field. On Monday the two sides met and agreed on a compromise.
The Bakersfield group will modify their request to change the name near the train station to "Haggard Way," which will leave open the option for the Oildale committee to use the longer name at a future date.
A joint city-county meeting is set for February 27th, where the community can come out and give their input on the proposed street names.
