Committee: Haggard Deserves Honor, But Where?
OILDALE -- Merle Haggard will soon have a road named in his honor, but Oildale residents can't decide where.
The Kern County Board of Supervisors has appointed a nine-member committee to find an Oildale street worth of Haggard's name.
There are nine plans under consideration, four include renaming portions of 7th Standard Road. Others include parts of North Chester Avenue, Airport Drive and all of Highway 178.
Country singer Buck Owens already had a road named in his honor. Supporters hope the road-naming trend will continue.
"I think everyone needs some recognition, especially when they have the international fame that Buck Owens and Merle Haggard have," said Dean Haddock of Oildale.
It could take between two to three months before the location of Merle Haggard Way is chosen.
