Fatal Crash On Highway 99

Around 5:50 a.m. on Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said a 27-year-old man was trying to merge onto southbound SR-99 from California Avenue at an unknown speed.

Thirty-three-year-old Stephan Dalton was traveling southbound on SR-99, in a big rig, in the number 4 lane at 55 mph, officer Robert Rodriguez said.

Police said the unidentified 27-year-old man accelerated in an attempt to enter the freeway ahead of Dalton.

As the man entered the number 4 lane, Rodriguez said he struck the right front end of the big rig.

The man then spun off the roadway and struck a light post; then continued and struck a eucalyptus tree.

The man was able to get himself out of his vehicle and was transported to Kern Medical Center.

The man was pronounced dead at KMC as a result of internal injuries.

Alcohol was not a factor with this collision, Rodriguez said.
