GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - A Grand Junction woman has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for plotting to kill her husband by poisoning his whiskey.

Deone Marie Graham received the maximum sentence Monday in Mesa County District Court.

She pleaded guilty in August to solicitation to commit first-degree murder and inducing consumption of a controlled substance by fraudulent means.

Court documents say Graham suspected her husband was cheating on her, and she wanted him dead so she could collect his retirement benefits.

According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, Graham admitted she wanted to make her husband's death appear to be a suicide.

The investigation began after a witness came forward with information that Graham had asked the witness to buy illegal drugs for her so that Graham could put the drugs in her husband's whiskey bottle and poison him.

The witness also provided information that Graham had previously put various prescription drugs into her husband's whiskey, causing him to be sick for several days.

The husband also provided information to investigators that he had been receiving death threats through text messages from his wife.
