STANTON, Calif. - A 72-year-old grandmother from Southern California fired at an intruder and barely missed him in a confrontation recorded by a 911 operator.
Jan Cooper of Anaheim said Tuesday that she fired one shot from her .357-magnum revolver early Sunday as a burglar tried to break in through a sliding glass door. Cooper says she has owned guns since she was a teenager and has years of practice at the shooting range with her husband, a World War II veteran.
The suspect was arrested by Orange County sheriff's deputies a short time later.
Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says the gun was legal and registered.
In a 911 call, Cooper can be heard firing one shot and then cursing and screaming at the man to go away as deputies arrive.
"They are in our yard. I'm firing (Bang!) Back up you son of XXXXXX! Back up!"
