FOUNTAIN, Colo. (AP) - The parents of a 6-year-old transgender girl have filed a complaint with the Colorado Office of Civil Rights after her school district refused to allow her to use the girls' bathroom.

Jeremy and Kathryn Mathis were at the State Capitol in Denver Wednesday to announce the complaint filed against the Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8. Coy Mathis is a boy, but has been diagnosed with a condition in which she identifies as a girl. She is a first-grader at Eagleside Elementary School.

The district says Coy can use staff bathrooms or the one in the nurse's office but the Mathises say that stigmatizes their daughter and fear it could lead to harassment or bullying.

School district officials have declined to comment citing the complaint.
