AURORA, Colo. - A man removing tree stumps in a yard in Aurora died in a freak accident Monday morning.
Investigators believe the adult man, whose name was not released, was removing tree stumps out of a front yard on Scranton Street, by connecting a tow strap with a hook from his International Scout sport utility vehicle to the stumps in an effort to pull them from the ground.
"While pulling, the strap somehow became disconnected from the stump and the hook slung back toward the vehicle," according to an Aurora police report. "The hook traveled though the rear window and struck the driver in the back of the head."
Investigators said the man's SUV took off across the street, careened through another yard and onto a front porch where it hit a house and rolled over.
The SUV hit an elderly male who was sitting on the porch. Police said the man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The SUV driver died.
Aurora Police said they do not expect to file any charges in the case.
