Connecticut lawmakers were outraged by the National Rifle Association's release of a new smart phone app.

The 3D shooting range game, offered to kids as young as 4 years of age, was released one month after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The NRA said the game helps to "instill safe and responsible ownership through fun challenges and realistic simulations."

During a Dec. 21 press conference, NRA Executive Director Wayne La Pierre argued that video games and movies are largely to blame for the culture of violence in the country, "There exists in this country, sadly, a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells and stows violence against its own people, through vicious, violent video games with names like 'Bullet Storm,' 'Grand Theft Auto,' 'Mortal Combat,' and 'Splatterhouse.' "

The NRA has also expressed disappointment with a discussion between the group and the gun policy task force led by Vice President Joe Biden.

Connecticut's Governor Dannel Malloy called the app offensive and asked of the NRA, "How dumb can you get? How insulting can you be? How outrageous can your behavior be? How tone deaf can you be?

Other lawmakers also voiced outrage over the app and its release date.

In a CNN report, gun violence activists say momentum is building this year.

"Connecticut Against Gun Violence' has actually had more than 5-thousand people join our 'Facebook' page... just since the incident. They want anti-gun violence legislation in the State of Connecticut.  They want Connecticut to be a leader and to do the strongest legislation in the nation... that is the least we can do," said Betty Gallo, who is part of the group Connecticut Against Gun Violence
