CALIFORNIA CITY, Calif. - The death of a 1-year-old Las Vegas girl has been ruled a homicide by Kern County coroner Donny Youngblood.

On Dec. 18 officers and California City Fire Department paramedics were sent to a California City home regarding a baby in the house who had stopped breathing.

Officers said they arrived within 2 minutes of the call and started CPR on 1-year-old Aalyiah Jerkins. Jerkins was taken to Tehachapi hospital but later transferred to Huntington Memorial Hospital and died a few days later.

Police interviewed several family members who were at the home when Jerkins stopped breathing. Detectives were called in when inconsistencies arose as to what happened to the baby to cause it to stop breathing, officials said.

An autopsy was performed today and confirmed the baby died of blunt force trauma. Detectives are now investigating this death as a homicide.

This will be the third homicide this month in California City.

No arrests have been made.
