BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - An 11-year-old died after she was struck by a vehicle Friday evening.

At about 7:30 p.m., officials said Sarhory Rico-Palomares was was hit by a car while trying to run across Highway 58.

According to officials, a woman called 911 saying her husband had just hit a pedestrian on the highway.

Traffic was backed up for about a mile, while crews arrived on scene.

Upon arrival, officials learned that a group of children were trying to run across the highway, when Rico-Palomares was hit.

Rico-Palomares was taken to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.
