BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A 2-year old Bakersfield boy is at the center of a medical procedure that might soon be the first of it's kind published in the United States.

Andrew Morales was born without a right lung, and as a result, his major internal organs have been shifting to the space on the left side of his chest.

Doctors at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles recently performed a scarcely published procedure in hopes of restoring some balance and longevity to his life.

A tissue expander was placed on the right side of his chest, that will slowly be filled with saline over time, to massage his organs back into their rightful place.

The movement of his left lung and heart has caused a 'kinking' in his airway, resulting in a dozen bouts with bronchitis and five hospitalizations in just two years.

Once Andrew finishes growing, Doctors will go back in and replace the expander with a device to permanently fill the space.

His family have incurred massive medical bills as a result and friends have set up a fundraising effort to help them.
