BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
Two women and a juvenile were arrested after reportedly setting up devices at an ATM machine to retrieve card and PIN numbers of random bank customers.
On Tuesday, Dec. 11, the Bakersfield Police Department was contacted by Chase Bank Security and it was reported that an unidentified suspect had planted a card skimmer and video camera on the bank’s ATM machine located at the Chase Bank branch at 6085 Coffee Road.
These devices capture an unsuspecting victim’s Bank Card and PIN numbers.
The unidentified suspect was recognized as the same individual responsible for several other similar offenses recently committed in the San Bernardino area.
This suspect is part of bank burglary and forgery crew who plant these devices on ATMs and then return at a later time to retrieve the device.
A description of the suspect was obtained from the ATM video and given to Police Department Detectives who moved into the area of the bank. While conducting surveillance, Detectives located the suspect in a grocery store near the bank. They followed him to a vehicle occupied by 3 additional suspects that was waiting in the parking lot.
The suspects drove to the area of Coffee and Hageman Roads where contact was made.
All suspects attempted to flee from the contact, but Detectives were able to apprehended the primary suspect and two additional suspects.
The fourth suspect fled into a nearby neighborhood and eluded capture.
A search of the suspect vehicle, a rental car out of San Bernardino, led to the discovery of several additional skimming devices, computers, numerous counterfeit / stolen credit cards, narcotics, and two loaded handguns which had previously been reported stolen.
The suspects were arrested and booked for applicable burglary, conspiracy, forgery, ID theft, weapons and drug charges.
The suspects arrested included a 16-year-old juvenile; 35-year-old Rhianna Lyn Lawrence, and 40-year-old Dawn Marie Lawrence.
The Lawrence’s are sisters and their bail was set at $1,000,000. The Lawrence’s were booked on assorted charges at the Kern County Jail and the juvenile was taken to Juvenile Hall.
The Secret Service will be meeting with detectives from the Bakersfield Police Department to assist with examination of the skimming devices and additional investigation.
