SANTA CRUZ, Calif - Authorities say at least three people, including two police officers, have been killed in a shootout in Santa Cruz.

According to KGO, the ABC Affiliate in San Francisco, the two officers and one suspect were shot in two separate shootings around 3:30 p.m.

The first shooting took place as police were investigating a sexual assault when a suspect fired, hitting the two officers. The second shooting took place while police were in pursuit of the suspect.

Authorities do not believe there are any additional suspects at large and say there is no longer a threat to public safety.

Several schools in the area were placed on lockdown and nearby residents were told to stay indoors.

The police department says it is notifying the officers' next of kin and have not released their identities.
