ARVIN, Calif. -

Two women who work at a local water district have been charged with stealing more than 50 thousand dollars from the district.

The Arvin community services district is the local water district for the city of Arvin.

Two and a half years ago district leaders noticed money missing.

After a long investigation Arvin police discovered about 50 thousand dollars missing.

A current employee of the district, Juanita Lopez, told authorities a former employee, Elda Lopez, was the one who took the money.

Police say the women are related.

Juanita told police she accepted money from Elda and tipped her off about the police investigation.

Police are still figuring how the money was taken.

Police arrested Juanita and she was charged with three felonies but Elda skipped town and no one knows where she is.

23ABC went to the Arvin water district to ask them about the case and to our surprise Juanita Lopez is still working there.

We tried to ask Juanita if she had done it but she wasn't interested in talking to us.

District officials say Arvin police haven't given them the results of their investigation so for now they can’t discipline Juanita.

Meanwhile police aren’t sure they've found the full extent of the embezzlement and police say no one really knows where the money went.
