BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - One of the "keep Bakersfield beautiful" projects, the community garden, got some much needed help from some unlikely folks all thanks to a virus and a little divine intervention.
A youth ministry from Lincoln Nebraska was heading to Dinuba, California to help that community for a week.
But a contagious virus there halted their plans. So, they were forced to stop in Bakersfield instead.
When word spread that they were here, Saint John Lutheran Church found a place for them to stay and Valley Baptist Church gave them a bus to get around.
Ever since, they've been spending the entire week giving the community garden a complete makeover.
“It’s definitely benefiting the community. They’ve shared a lot with us. They’re really enjoying it and we're glad that we can help them out a lot," said Amanda Horner a member of the youth group.
Youth leaders told 23ABC that their mission trip for next year is planned for Fresno. However, they say they will definitely make a stop in Bakersfield again.
