Nearly 1,154 animals have been surrendered by their owner to Kern County animal shelters since January 1, 2016.

Kern County Animal Services (KCAS) created a program called “Happy At Home” to offer an alternative to animal owners in crisis.

Starting October 3, pet owners can contact the program to receive assistance in addressing common obstacles to long-term pet ownership.

The most common reasons owners give up their animals include moving into non-pet friendly houses, care costs, and behavioral issues, according to KCAS Director Nick Cullen.

The program can be contacted at 661-868-7145 or HappyAtHome@co.kern.ca.us.
