BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - April is child abuse awareness month and child advocates across Kern County urged the public Friday to report every case of child abuse whether it's real or suspected.
National child abuse statistics show that approximately 80% of children that die from abuse are under the age of four.
One of the most notable cases in Kern County has been that of three year-old Trinity Hanna who was physically abused and killed. Her mother's boyfriend, Eric Foster, has been charged with her death and is awaiting trial. Her mother, Angela Hanna, will serve for years in prison for her involvement in her daughters death.
Child protective services said at least five children between the ages of two months and four years old were killed in 2012.
A flag honoring children killed by child abuse nationwide was raised in front of the Human Services building on California Avenue and will fly high all month long.
