Fairview Elementary School principal accused of murdering husband

Body of Todd Chance found Sunday in orchard

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The principal of Fairview Elementary School was arrested Thursday and accused of killing her husband.

Kern County Sheriff's investigators say they developed probable cause to arrest Leslie Jenea Chance, 46, in connection with the murder of Todd Chance, 45. She will be booked on murder charges at the Kern County Jail.

Chance's body was discovered by an field worker near an almond orchard Sunday. It was lying on a dirt extension off Noriega Road and Enos Lane. Officials later determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Through the investigation, detectives discovered that his black 2011 Ford Mustang was missing. A short time later, the car was found abandoned near the intersection of Tigerflower Drive and Wheatland Avenue in Bakersfield.

Ray Pruitt, spokesperson for the Kern County Sheriff's Office, told 23ABC evidence shows Leslie Chance was driving the car.

"We do believe she is the person who drove it into the neighborhood and left the vehicle in that neighborhood and then walked away," said Pruitt.

Investigators are still trying to figure out the motive for the shooting.

After the discovery of Chance's body, 23ABC tried to contact his family on several occasions -- only receiving a cryptic message which read "leave my children alone" and signed "Mom."

23ABC reached another family member for comment Thursday night, who confirmed Leslie Chance was the principal of Fairview Elementary.

"Who knows now how this will play out," said the family member, who did not want to be identified. "We are all shocked."

Funeral services for Todd Chance will be held on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Leslie Jenea Chance was booked into jail at 3:27 a.m. Friday on first-degree murder charges.

Chance is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, September 3rd -- the same day of her husband's funeral.
