BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -

The Keep Bakersfield Beautiful Committee is giving away artistic cigarette butt containers to Downtown businesses starting Friday, Nov. 9.

At least 50 of the 72 containers available are uniquely hand-painted by local artists and students in the spirit of the Downtown arts district.

Recipients of the cigarette butt containers have agreed to take responsibility for emptying, maintaining, and storing the containers.

This project is in partnership with the anti-litter campaign “Litter: It’s Beneath Us” and the Bakersfield Downtown Business Association. The Keep Bakersfield Beautiful Committee is providing receptacles for free thanks to grants from The Bakersfield Californian Foundation and the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program.

Keep Bakersfield Beautiful decided to give the receptacles to the Downtown area because the committee regularly sees an overwhelming amount of cigarette butts when it does litter clean-ups on its adopted stretch of Chester Avenue.
