Assemblyman calls on CIF to explain bowl exclusion for undefeated Wasco Union High School Tigers

Assemblyman Rudy Salas (D – Bakersfield) is calling on the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Commissioner of Athletics, Mr. Rob Wigod, to publicly disclose how the decision was reached to deny the undefeated and Central Section Division IV Champions Wasco Union High School Tigers varsity football team a place in the regional bowl game.
“The recent decision by the (CIF) committee to deny the Wasco Tigers, and our community, the opportunity to continue their outstanding season in the regional bowl game leaves many people wondering if the selection process is fair for all schools,” expressed Assemblyman Salas.
The Wasco Union High School Tigers finished the season a perfect 13 – 0 and won their first section title since 1953. “We try to teach our children that if you work hard and do the right thing, then everything will work out. What the (CIF) has done by selecting teams with lesser records to play in the regional bowl games goes against that. At a minimum the (CIF) selection committee owes the students, their families and our community an open explanation of how such decisions are made. It is my hope that the (CIF) will understand the urgency of my written request and provide clear, transparent answers on the process,” concluded Assemblyman Salas.
