Attorney General, Legislative leades announce truancy legislation

Bill will address states elementary school crisis

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris was joined by education and legislative leaders at the California State Capitol to announce  legislation that would help local school districts and communities address the state's elementary school truancy crisis.

Truancy is defined as "intentional, unauthorized absence from compulsory education."

The legislative package would simplify recommendations made in a report by the Attorney General in September of last year, titled In School + On Track , which revealed that in 2012 alone, one million elementary school students in California were truant, costing over $1.4 billion in lost funds annually to California school districts.
