Bad air quality blamed on low BPD recruitment numbers

34 open positions in department

The Bakersfield Police Department is having a hard time recruiting new officers to the force.

And the blame is being placed on bad air quality.

The department has been on a push to hire new officers with 34 positions currently open.

But Police Chief Greg Williamson says the valley's poor air quality is causing potential officers to pass on living and working in Bakersfield.

He adds that many recruits are moving to coastal cities or out of state.
