Bakersfield College art brings attention to tragedy of veteran suicide

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Artists at Bakersfield College wanted to bring light to the alarming trend of veteran suicide.

A new exhibit in the BC Veteran's Lounge is called "22 Joes Every Day."

Twenty-two refers to the number of veterans who commit suicide every day.

Artist and veteran Mark Pinto brings this alarming statistic to life by hanging 22 toy soldiers each day.

Pinto said much of his work comes from his own issues with reintegrating into civilian life.

"Ideally we have 22 every day to represent that statistic," Pinto said. "I try to incorporate the audience so they feel part of that process as well."

The 22 Joes Every Day exhibit will be on display at BC through Thursday.
