BAKERSFIELD - Millions of people across the country wore jeans Wednesday to participate in Denim Day to raise awareness around sexual violence issues and support survivors of sexual assault.
Bakersfield College will participated in the event by hanging jeans signed by students, faculty, staff, and administrators who are taking a stand against sexual violence.
Now in its 15th year, Denim Day is organized by the Los Angeles-based nonprofit Peace over Violence. Held each April during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Denim Day recalls an Italian court case that sparked international outrage when judges did not convict a rapist because the victim wore jeans. The judges ruled that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her attacker remove them, thus implying consent.
Still now in 2014, one in four women and one in six men will experience sexual assault over their lifetime, according to data gathered by Peace Over Violence.
At noon on Wednesday, April 23, Bakersfield College students, faculty, staff, and administrators stopped to sign donated jeans as they pledge to take a stand against sexual violence.
Bakersfield College president, Dr. Sonya Christian, and Bakersfield College Student Government Association president Shelby Sward will sign a Bakersfield College proclamation honoring the day.
