Bakersfield Comic-Con focuses on comic books, but holds first costume contest

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - If you see Wolverine and Captain Kirk walking down the street Sunday, it is not the setup of a joke.

Bakersfield Comic-Con is Sunday with its first costume contest.

Comic conventions are famous for incredible costumes from pop culture, including television shows like Doctor Who and Star Trek, movies, comic books and more.

The winner in Bakersfield will take home a cash prize.

Comic-Con will also host the members of the San Joaquin Squad 501st, a local squad of Star Wars costumers.

Sessions include drawing and developing good comics, tabletop game play, special guests and a raffle for charity.

According to The Big Bang Theory, Bakersfield Comic-Con is a lot smaller than San Diego Comic-Con. It is more about the comic books, the way these conventions used to be before they went all Hollywood.
