BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A dad is dead and his son is recovering from a gunshot wound after a family disturbance in Bakersfield.
On August 10, at about 8:13 a.m., officers from the Bakersfield Police Department went to a home in the 10900 block of Artist Court for a report of shots fired.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with the woman who stated her son and husband were involved in a physical altercation inside of the house.
According to police, the son, identified as 33-year-old Geoff Edwin Murphy, then exited the home. Police said Geoff was found suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his upper torso. Geoff then told police his father, identified as 74-year-old James Patrick Harris, was still inside the home.
Officers entered the home and found James dead. According to the Coroner's report, James was shot and died as a result of his injuries. An autopsy was performed and the cause of death is perforating gunshot wound and the manner is homicide.
Geoff was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Geoff was then arrested for one count of murder, two counts of elder abuse, and two counts of criminal threats.
Investigation is continuing.
