BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Bakersfield Firefighters will be conducting their annual Fill-The-Boot drive to raise funds for the Central Valley Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
On Friday, April 26, off-duty Bakersfield City Firefighters will be at the intersection of Stockdale Highway and Gosford Road from 7 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
Passing motorists can donate dollars and 'fill the boot' as they travel through the intersection.
Last year, firefighters raised about $43,000. The funds raised will help send local kids to MDA summer camp.
MDA Summer Camp is designed for children with physical disabilities due to muscle diseases. All activities are modified so children with disabilities can participate in as many events as possible.
MDA also provides the following services to local families free of charge:
- monthly support groups,
- medical clinics, and
- loan and repair of medical equipment.
MDA is the largest private sponsor of neuromuscular disease research. MDA provides a pediatric clinic at Children's Hospital of Central California, and an adult clinic at the University of California San Francisco and Fresno.
