BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - One central Bakersfield has a new community garden to enjoy thanks to volunteers from Keep Bakersfield Beautiful and Ikea.
Volunteers planted the garden on Saturday on empty lots. The garden is located on the corner of 4th Street and Eye Street.
The Keep Bakersfield Beautiful community started working on the garden last spring during the great American clean up.
They planted vegetables plants and flowers for the first time Saturday. Before the remodel, the area was an illegal dump site and old swap meet.
"This is important to the city, this might be a habit in the future," one volunteered said.
A grand opening for the garden will be held at a later date.
