BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A Stockdale High School track star is gaining world wide recognition after representing the U.S. in an international track meet last Sunday.
Blake Haney, who has already dubbed 2 CIF titles for the 3200 and 1600 meter races, finished fifth at the IAAF World Youth Championships in the Ukraine.
"Racing in front of a large crowd in a different country was amazing," Haney said.
Haney trailed behind runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. He explained that competition there was much tougher than that in the states.
"Especially the Kenyans that won my race, they're very good. It's tough to compete with them," he said.
Although, the Stockdale senior did not place in the race he did set a new personal record for his 1500 meter race at 3:44.69, which is now the fastest time in the nation for high schoolers.
Even though Haney has competed internationally, he said that he still find a lot of competition at local meets.
"There is still a ton of guys in the high school scene that will challenge me," Haney said.
Haney will run his senior year at Stockdale and hopes to add national titles to his racing career.
