Bakersfield man arrested after standoff

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A man involved in a standoff with Kern County sheriff's deputies and the SWAT team is now behind bars.
According to the Kern County Sheriff's Office, 41-year-old Robert Shields assaulted Phillip Carpenter Saturday night in the 10100 block of Greenacres Drive in Bakersfield. Shields also threatened to kill Carpenter and others.
Shields then went to his home in the 300 block of Redwood Meadows Drive in Bakersfield and barricaded himself in the attic.
He surrendered an hour later and was transported to jail. He was booked in for assault causing great bodily injury, participation in a criminal street gang and criminal threats.
