Bakersfield man arrested for vehicular manslaughter after a traffic stop took a wrong turn

Man arrested for four other violations

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Kern County Sheriff's deputies said they initiated a traffic stop in the area of Brundage Lane and Oswell Street On Saturday night around 11 p.m.

Shortly after a deputy said he tried to talk to the driver of a vehicle who was identified as 37-year-old Federico Sanchez.

Sanchez proceeded to drive away, deputies said, at a fast speed. 

The deputy said he ran back to his car and drove off to follow Sanchez. 

Deputies said Sanchez refused to pull over and began to drive erratically and crashed into a parked trailer on Oswell Street just south of Center Street in East Bakersfield. 

A passenger in the vehicle was ejected from the car and died at the scene, officials reported. 

Sanchez was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries, deputies said.

Deputies said Sanchez is currently under arrest for vehicular manslaughter, felony evading police, under the influence of a controlled substance, driving under the influence as well as several outstanding warrants. 

The California Highway Patrol said they are investigating the crash. 

The name of the passenger has not been released.
